New York City Bronx-Whitestone Bridge marker

The Bronx-Whitestone bridge (or just “the Whitestone” if you’re in a hurry) is a toll bridge on Interstate 678 in New York City. It crosses the East River, linking the Bronx with the Whitestone neighborhood of Queens. The Whitestone is a suspension bridge, which opened in 1939 with only four lanes. The following year, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington state collapsed. This led New York to rework the bridge to prevent similar forces to those that took down the Tacoma Narrows from doing the same to the Bronx-Whitestone.

Since about 1965, the way to the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge has been marked by special seven-sided, orange, blue, and white markers. These contain the words “BRONX WHITESTONE BRIDGE”, along with an arrow pointing the way to the bridge. Our Bronx-Whitestone Bridge marker is a replica of one of these signs. It’s made using photographs of actual signs in the field as reference.
