Oakland is the seat of and largest city in Alameda County, California, on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. As of 2020, it was the eighth-largest city in California. Oakland was named after the oak woodland that once covered much of the area; many of these oaks ended up as part of buildings across the bay in San Francisco. The city has always been a transportation and industrial hub: in 1869, it became the western terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, which led to its port becoming the busiest in Northern California. Despite its industrial nature, Oakland’s Lake Merritt was the first official wildlife refuge in the country. Oakland has a notable art scene as well; it is said to be home to more artists per capita than anywhere else in the United States.
