The Sleeping Bear Dunes, along the shore of Lake Michigan west of Traverse City, reach 450 feet above the lake’s surface. Visitors to the dunes sometimes assume that it will be easy to hike down to the lake, enjoy the water, and come back up. However, it’s much easier to climb down a sand dune than back up it. And with the lake waters cutting off any other way of returning to shore, it isn’t hard to end up in need of rescue—which puts both you and the rescuers in danger. A rescue also requires a considerable amount of manpower and equipment, so the costs can add up quite quickly.
Our Avoid Getting Stuck at the Bottom warning sign is a precise replica of the one posted at Sleeping Bear Dunes. “Warning,” it says, “Avoid getting stuck at the bottom! Lake levels are high—the only way out is up. Rescues cost $3000. Keep yourself and our rescuers out of danger.” Next to these words are two unfortunate lake visitors, one trapped in the water and one who isn’t having a much better time on the dunes.
