New York City welcome sign (Ed Koch, 1978)

During the term of New York City mayor Ed Koch, a unique style of city limit sign was posted at the road entrances to New York City. It featured artwork of the Statue of Liberty in front of the Manhattan skyline, in a classic red, white, and blue color scheme. The World Trade Center twin towers and the Empire State Building are both easily discernible. Below this is the text “Welcome to New York City”, and “Edward I. Koch, Mayor”. At the very bottom of the sign is the Department of Transportation credit line. This style of sign was used up until Koch left office in 1989.

We’ve recreated the classic 1978 New York City welcome sign for your modern-day home decor needs. We’ve precisely duplicated the graphics and layout using photographs of original signs in the field. For the sitting mayor, we’ve included Ed Koch’s name, but we will happily swap it out for the name of any other mayor, or any other person, including you—or even leave it off altogether. Signs of this style are very hard to find on the collector’s market due to the length of time they’ve been retired from service. This is your chance to own an excellent display piece, without paying out the nose for it.

Our 1978 New York City welcome sign is flat printed on heavy 14-gauge steel. It is non-reflective, making it an attractive addition to any garage, bar, man cave, or anywhere else you want to show your love for the Big Apple. It’s durable enough to withstand the harsh New York winters when displayed outdoors, too. Choose from sizes of 9.6 in. × 12 in up to 32 in. × 40 in.
