In California, many major roads not maintained by the state are instead kept up by the counties. To make it easier to get around, in 1958, the California Route Marker Program was devised. This project established a standardized numbering scheme and marker for county routes. The state was broken up into zones, each designated with a letter. Each county route was given a designation with a zone letter, followed by a number. The route designations are displayed on five-sided signs, along with the name of the county it is located in. These markers are blue and yellow, the state colors of California. (These pentagonal signs were later adopted as a national standard.) Yolo County Route E6 is part of zone E, which is located in central California. Route E6 serves Davis, running along Covell Blvd. on the north side of town, and Mace Blvd. on the east side of town, connecting it to both I-505 and I-80.
