Description

The White Mountain National Forest is famous for some of America’s most extreme weather. In 1934, Mount Washington recorded winds reaching 231 mph (372 km/h). A tornado with winds that strong would qualify as an EF5! The measurement stood as the world wind speed record for many years. Mount Washington set another record on February 3, 2023. The overnight temperature fell to –46°F (–43°C). Winds reached 96 mph (154 km/h), with gusts up to 127 mph (204 km/h). Together, these conditions produced a wind chill of –108°F (–78°C). This remains the lowest wind chill ever calculated in the United States.

The White Mountain National Forest is home to several striking warning signs posted for would-be hikers facing extreme mountain weather. Our Try This Trail Only If You Are In Top Physical Condition sign is a replica of one such sign. It reads: “ATTENTION—Try this trail only if you are in top physical condition, well clothed and carrying extra clothing and food. Many have died above timberline from exposure. Turn back at the first sign of bad weather.” Our rendition of the sign recreates the distinctive style of Forest Service signage from the 1920s and 1930s. We use block lettering inspired by signs from the Bureau of Public Roads and other federal agencies of the era.

We print each sign on heavy 14-gauge steel for lasting durability. Its glossy, non-reflective finish recreates the classic porcelain look of vintage signage and protects the sign from the elements when installed outdoors. Pre-drilled mounting holes make installation quick and easy. It’s available in a range of sizes to help you find the perfect fit for your home, cabin, office, lodge, or collection:

  • 16 in. × 8 in.
  • 28 in. × 14 in. (the original size of signs done in this style)
  • 36 in. × 18 in.
  • 48 in. × 24 in.
  • 72 in. × 36 in. (so big it’ll be split between two panels for easier shipping and installation!)
