New Jersey Garden State Parkway Exit 89A, Route 70, Brick

Description

The Garden State Parkway is a toll road running the length of New Jersey. It begins at Cape May, at the southern tip of the state. From there, it extends all the way to the New York state line. About 89 miles from the southern terminus of the highway, in Ocean County, is exit 89A. This exit allows drivers access to Route 70 eastbound toward Brick.

The state of New Jersey created Brick Township in 1850, at the same time as it created Ocean County. It was named in memory of prominent citizen Joseph W. Brick. For Brick Township’s first 75 years, the major industry was cranberry production. However, the opening of the Point Pleasant Canal in 1925 allowed salt water into the township’s rivers and bays, making them unsuitable for cranberry production. After this, Brick Township became a resort town. It had no town hall until 1953, nor a library until 1965. Local residents previously performed these functions in their homes.

Brick was named the safest city in America in 2006. It is also the hometown of actress Kirsten Dunst. Dunst grew up in the township before moving to California to pursue her acting career.

It is made according to the modern 2009 MUTCD specifications for freeway guide signs. It is flat-printed on 14-gauge steel, which looks great indoors but is durable enough to withstand the elements outdoors.
