Description
Northwest Territories Highway 1 is the portion of the Mackenzie Highway north of the 60th parallel. While the section of road south of the junction with Highway 3 is part of the route from the territorial capital, Yellowknife, to points south, Highway 1 itself does not enter the city. It instead serves the sparsely-populated lands in the southwest quadrant of the territory. The largest town it serves is Fort Simpson, population 1,100. Many of the highway’s river crossings have no bridges. During the winter months, travelers simply drive across the ice. In the summer, ferries shuttle vehicles from one bank of the river to the other.
For many of us, traveling on Northwest Territories Highway 1 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But we’ve recreated its iconic highway marker so you can relive your journeys on this unique highway. Our replica is made according to the standard used by the Northwest Territories government between about 2000 and 2010. This version introduced the blue background, replacing the green of the older issue, while retaining the white polar bear graphic. Every detail of our replica is just like the original! It’s the closest you can get to seeing the real thing, without having to go north of the 60th parallel to do it. It’s a perfect addition to any indoor or outdoor space that could use a touch of charm from the Canadian Arctic.
Our Northwest Territories Highway 1 route marker is printed on heavy 14-gauge steel. Its glossy, non-reflective coating holds up well even under the harsh conditions of an Arctic winter. Choose the size that fits your needs, from 10 in. × 14 in. all the way up to a mammoth 45 in. × 63 in. We’ve included two convenient mounting holes for easy installation. (We’ll customize any sign in our library to fit your needs, including this one! Get this marker with a different number, or a different style. Or, have us make one from your province or state! The possibilities are endless; just contact Jake to get started!)
