Description
The Carretera Austral (Southern Road), also known as Chile Ruta 7, is the primary highway of the remote portion of Patagonia in southern Chile. The terrain it crosses—including mountains, fjords, and dense forests—made it a very difficult highway to build, with construction starting in 1976 and the highway only being completed in 2000. However, without it, the only way to get from point A to point B in Chilean Patagonia was to cross into Argentina. That made the Carretera Austral of critical importance to Chile. Nevertheless, other than Puerto Montt at the highway’s northern end, the largest settlement along the highway is Coyhaique in Aysén Region, which only has a population of about 54,000.
Our Carretera Austral sign is a precise replica of one of the guide signs posted along the Ruta 7. Beneath the highway’s title it offers two destinations. One is Coyhaique, accessed by a turnoff to the left. If a traveler continues on ahead, they’ll simply be headed “Al Sur”—to the south, because there are no more widely-known destinations ahead! This sign makes a great conversation piece, and an excellent way to relive your experiences traversing the remote landscapes of southern Chile!
Our Carretera Austral sign is flat printed in the United States on heavy 14-gauge steel. Every detail is accurate to the original, including the RutaCL font only used on Chilean road signs. The sign has a high-gloss, non-retroreflective finish, which allows the sign to be installed indoors or outdoors. Mounting holes are included to make installation easy.
