Chile’s Ruta 7, also known as the Carretera Austral (Southern Road), is the main road through the portion of Patagonia in southern Chile. The highway serves the most remote part of Chile, traversing a wide range of terrain, including mountains, fjords, forests, and even glaciers. This made building the highway exceedingly difficult, as evidenced by the fact that construction started in 1976, the road opened to traffic in 1988, and the last section to be built opened in 2000. However, the Carretera Austral was of critical importance to Chile, as before it was built, drivers often had no way to get from point A to point B without crossing into Argentina.

Our Chile Route 7 sign is an exact replica of the route markers that appear along this famous highway. It follows the exact standards for Chilean highway signs, as laid out in the Manual de Señalización de Tránsito. It even uses the RutaCL font exclusively used on Chilean highways since 2012! The sign bears the words X Región, signifying Los Lagos Region, no. 10 in Chile’s regional numbering system.
