Description
The family name Murphy dates back many centuries. It means “sea warrior”, and to this day, it is the most common last name in Ireland. The family coat of arms dates from nearly the same time. Its blazon is recorded as quarterly, argent and gules, four lions rampant countercharged, on a fess sable three garbs or. In regular English, that’s a shield split four ways, the quarters alternating red and white, each with a lion of the opposite color. A black field in the middle contains three gold bundles of wheat.
