The state of Nevada started its life making most of its income from its natural resources, especially the silver that was plentiful in the northwestern part of the state. However, over the years, mines were depleted and early settlers began leaving for greener pastures. Faced with the prospect of being a government with nobody to govern, Nevada tried a number of things to try to attract new residents and businesses to the state. Many laws were passed in pursuit of this, Nevada’s famously liberal gambling and drinking laws being among them. The legislature also slashed a number of taxes all the way to zero.

To promote the benefits of the state’s tax code, it began informing travelers of them on its “Nevada State Line” signs in 1947. “No income tax, no sales tax, no inheritance tax, no corporation tax, no gift tax. A debt free state welcomes you,” the signs read. The only graphic on the sign was a depiction of the state’s borders, with the words “Admitted to the Union as the 36th state in 1864”. While some of these tax policies have changed over the years—Nevada now has a 4.6% state sales tax on non-grocery items, for instance—it remains one of the nine states with no state income tax.
