The Avenue of the Americas is a stretch of what is commonly called Sixth Avenue in New York City. The name was devised by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia in 1945,  as a means to promote redevelopment of the street. It was hoped that the designation as Avenue of the Americas would attract foreign consulates to locate along the street by honoring the nations of the Americas, as well as “Pan-American ideals and principles”.  To that end, the street was lined with circular signs or “medallions” depicting the national symbols and coats of arms of all of the nations in North and South America.
