What is now the borough of Brooklyn started life as an independent city, and was only absorbed into New York City in 1898. This gave it a distinct personality and culture all its own. To recognize Brooklyn’s the unique culture, former borough president Marty Markowitz had unique signage displayed to travelers entering Brooklyn, as well as a sign telling those leaving Brooklyn to “Fuhgeddaboudit“. Not everyone was a fan of the new signage, though—an Italian-American man called Markowitz to complain it made light of his culture. Knowing Markowitz was Jewish, he asked the borough president how he’d feel if the sign had the Yiddish term of dismay “Oy vey!” instead. Markowitz’s reply? “How would I feel? That’s the best idea I ever heard!” He then ordered the “Fuhgeddaboudit” sign on the Williamsburg Bridge patched over with the words “Oy Vey!”
