New York Welcome to Brooklyn signs

The city of Brooklyn, New York was founded ten years after the City of New York on Manhattan island. The two were separate cities until 1898, when Brooklyn was incorporated into New York City, becoming one of its boroughs. As a result of its history, Brooklyn has maintained a distinct personality and culture. Former borough president Marty Markowitz sought to draw on this personality when he devised a series of unique signs to welcome motorists to Brooklyn.  Several variations of these signs exist on the major entrances into the borough, each with a different slogan. (Another set of signs, facing the other way, advise travelers that they are “Leaving Brooklyn, Fuhgeddaboudit“.) In 2022, borough president Antonio Reynoso added another sign to the mix, bearing the words “Spread love, it’s the Brooklyn way”, a line from the 1994 Notorious B.I.G. song “Juicy”.

Our Welcome to Brooklyn signs are exact replicas of the distinctive signs that appear at the entrances to the borough. Using photos of the original signs in the field, we’ve created versions of the sign with eight different slogans, all of which appear on original signs on Brooklyn’s highways. Any of them would make a great addition to a display of Brooklyn-themed decor, or a great gift for any proud Brooklynite.

Our signs include the names of the borough president and mayor who held office at the time they were originally installed (for the “Spread love” version, that’s borough president Antonio Reynoso and mayor Eric Adams, and for all others borough president Marty Markowitz and mayor Michael Bloomberg).
