Description
Interstate 95 is the main artery of the eastern seaboard. It runs from Miami, Florida, through Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia and Maryland (clipping a corner of D.C.), Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, before ending at the Canadian border in Houlton, Maine. The route is over 1900 miles (3000 km) long, and serves some of the largest cities in the United States, including New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, and Jacksonville.
One of the quirks of the American highway system is that it is nearly entirely owned and maintained by the states. This is true of even nationally-designated routes, like Interstate and US highways. In order to get reluctant states on board with the idea national highway numbering, the state name appeared on first several designs of US highway markers. This tradition was also followed with the Interstate route shield when it was introduced in 1957. However, the higher speeds the Interstate System led to a need for more legible signage. One logical change was to remove the state name and make the route number larger. The resulting variant—referred to in the collector community as the “neutered” Interstate shield—was part of the original 1957 standards, but gained popularity in the 1970s, when it was made the only standard shield. Although the version with the state name was later restored to the sign manual, I-95 shields with no state name can be found all along the corridor.
Our United States Interstate 95 route sign is made to the exact 1957 neutered shield standard. It is flat printed, in the good old USA, on heavy 14-gauge steel. To make it an excellent home decor item, we’ve made it non-reflective. Its glossy coating also allows it to stand up to outdoor conditions from the Florida sun to a harsh Maine winter. No matter where you choose to install it, the included mounting holes make installation easy. Choose one of the following sizes:
- 12 in. × 12 in. (our economy option)
- 18 in. × 18 in. (a size found only in the earliest manuals, intended for some low-speed contexts)
- 24 in. × 24 in. (the typical size of a modern Interstate shield)
- 36 in. × 36 in. (the “oversize” marker, used for situations demanding extra emphasis or visibility)
We can make a sign like this for any Interstate, from 2 to 990! Want a different type of sign? We can also make guide signs, warning signs, welcome signs, US and state route signs, and more! If you don’t see it on our website, ask to place a custom order—just contact Jake to get started!
