Interstate 79 is one of the original routes of the Interstate System. It passes, north-south, through western Pennsylvania. I-79 enters the state from West Virginia north of Morgantown, then proceeds north to the city of Washington, where it meets I-70. While I-79 doesn’t enter Pittsburgh itself, it does serve the western parts of its metropolitan area, crossing the Ohio River upstream of Coraopolis. It intersects the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) near Warrendale, and I-80 southeast of Mercer. After bypassing Meadville and junctioning with Interstate 90, it ends in Erie,  just before reaching the lake that gives the city its name.
