M-1 is the state route designation for Woodward Avenue, a major street in downtown Detroit, Michigan. Woodward Avenue was a key location in the development of the automobile. The street was the founding site or headquarters for many of the companies making up the industry in its early days. As a result, Woodward Avenue was used as an informal test track for the development of new cars. As cars became more common and the numbered highway systems were established, Woodward Avenue first became part of US Route 10, which became M-1 when US-10 was moved to the Lodge Freeway in 1969. To recognize M-1 for its role in the early automobile era, the Federal Highway Administration declared it an All-American Road. Only thirty other roads in the country share this distinction, which is the highest tier in the United States scenic byway system.
