The Blue Ridge Parkway is a unique highway in the eastern Appalachian Mountains. It stretches for 469 miles across North Carolina and Virginia, following the spine of the Blue Ridge mountain chain. The Blue Ridge Parkway was not meant to be an efficient course from city to city. Instead, the National Park Service built it to be a scenic attraction in its own right. The road avoids major cities in favor of providing access to scenic vistas, hiking trails, and campgrounds. Along the way, travelers pass through 26 tunnels cutting through the mountains. Despite being deliberately engineered to be a road less traveled, year after year, it is the most-visited attraction in the entire national park system. The state of North Carolina even chose the Blue Ridge Parkway to represent it in the state quarter program.
