Germany Checkpoint Charlie You Are Leaving the American Sector sign

After World War II, Germany was divided into four sectors, one controlled by each of the four occupying powers—the United States, Great Britain, France, and the USSR. The city of Berlin, deep in the Soviet sector, was likewise divided into four sectors. Eventually the Soviet sectors of both Berlin and Germany as a whole became communist country of East Germany, encircling West Berlin. One of the primary crossing points between West Berlin and East Berlin was Checkpoint C, or Checkpoint Charlie in the NATO phonetic alphabet. Located at the crossing point was probably the most famous road sign on the planet. It read YOU ARE LEAVING THE AMERICAN SECTOR in four languages: English, Russian, French, and German. At the bottom of the sign was “US ARMY 6”, identifying the 6th Infantry Regiment who was responsible for its upkeep.

Our Checkpoint Charlie “You Are Leaving the American Sector” sign is a precise replica of the sign that was posted in 1961 when the Berlin Wall was constructed. (The historical photo attached to this listing shows the sign in use in the field.) Several signs of near-identical character were used over the years. A very similar sign—a remake of the 1983 version—exists at the site of Checkpoint Charlie today; It is now a major tourist landmark, though mercifully there is no longer a checkpoint or a wall at the site. Our sign is a great commemoration of this historic site and is perfect for any room in the house.
