To help in navigation, most route markers throughout the nation are have a cardinal direction sign above (or sometimes below) them. This shows the route’s logical (which sometimes doesn’t match the actual!) direction of travel. Directional signs like this can be seen all over North America, but in the rest of the world they are used less frequently. Other countries prefer to orient their directional signage around the destinations that can be reached by a given route.
