The Dempster Highway is a road in Canada’s far northern territories, Yukon and the Northwest Territories. The portion of the highway in the Northwest Territories is officially designated Northwest Territories Highway 8, and is entirely north of the Arctic Circle. It is in the most northwestern part of the territory, and serves the towns of Fort McPherson, Tsiigehtchic, and Inuvik. From Inuvik, travelers can continue north to Tuktoyaktuk on Highway 10. Although most of the area that the Dempster Highway crosses is sparsely populated, it provides Highway 8 with unparalleled views of Arctic tundra landscapes. The road is primarily gravel and can be challenging to traverse, especially during adverse weather conditions. Highway 8 has no bridges over the Peel and Mackenzie rivers. Ferries shuttle vehicles across the river during the warmer months. During the winter, travelers cross the river by simply driving on the ice.
