California Chains Required sign

In the snowier parts of the world, tire chains are a must-have accessory to have on hand. When properly attached to a vehicle’s tires, chains can greatly increase traction on snow-covered roads. For this reason, some jurisdictions have laws mandating chain usage on particularly treacherous roads. California’s mountain passes are one such place. Caltrans has marked areas where chains are required with distinct black signage since at least the 1960s.

We’ve recreated one of California’s Chains Required signs for you to enjoy at home. Our sign is made according to the exact Caltrans R76 standards for signs of this design. Our replica looks just like the original because, mathematically, it is just like the original! Every detail, from the fonts used to the exact placement of the letters, is a precise duplicate of the real thing.

Our Chains Required sign is printed on heavy 14-gauge steel. It has a glossy, non-reflective finish highly reminiscent of the old porcelain signs once used in California. Our replica is perfect for display in any room. It’s durable enough to stand up to the sun and snow outdoors as well.  The original of this is four feet long and two feet tall. We’ve scaled our replica down to a range of more manageable sizes, from 14 in. × 7 in. all the way up to 72 in. × 36 in. Every version includes a set of convenient mounting holes.
