Description
In the earliest days of the automobile, private automobile clubs took on the responsibility for posting signage along the roads. One such organization was the California State Auto Association (CSAA). At one time, CSAA signage could be found from Northern California all the way to central Kansas. CSAA signage circa 1919 was made in a distinctive rhombus shape, with a yellow background and blue block lettering, the state colors of California. The association’s name appeared in the left and right corners, and its the logo at the bottom corner. The top corner was used to display the name of the road the highway was on, with government-maintained roads showing the text “STATE HIGHWAY”.
This sign, made in the style of the early CSAA signage, shows the destinations of Oak View and Ojai Valley to the right, and Ventura and Santa Barbara to the left. We’ve used historic photographs of CSAA signage to ensure that every detail is just the way CSAA would have made a sign with these destinations and distances. Show your love for these famous California cities with this excellent display piece!
