Joshua Tree National Park is located in the deserts of southeastern California, split between Riverside and San Bernardino counties. It is located to the northeast of Palm Springs and Indio. The majority of the park lies within the high Mojave Desert, which is the only place the Joshua tree (which is actually a type of yucca) grows. In fact, the Joshua tree is called an “indicator species” for the Mojave Desert—if you see one, you’re in the Mojave. The park also extends a bit into the lower Sonoran Desert to the east, where other yuccas and cholla cactus can be found.  Joshua Tree National Park is popular among visitors for its camping, rock climbing, and wildlife viewing opportunities. It’s also a favorite spot among astronomers, thanks to the dark skies afforded to it by its remote setting.
