Description

US Route 40 is a highway crossing the state of Colorado from west to east. Although US-40’s importance through much of the east half of the state has been supplanted by Interstate 70, US 40 is still serves as a vital corridor in the west half of the state. critical part of Colorado’s transportation infrastructure. It crosses into the state from Utah near Dinosaur, Colorado, then proceeds east toward Steamboat Springs. It then serves the Middle Park basin, which contains the headwaters of the Colorado River, as well as the ski destination of Winter Park. US 40 leaves Middle Park by way of Berthoud Pass, where it crosses the Continental Divide. It then follows I-70 into the Front Range metropolitan area, passing through Golden and Lakewood, before reaching Denver. US 40 follows Colfax Avenue, one of the city’s most prominent streets, through Denver. East of the city, it meets back up with I-70. US 40 follows the Interstate to Limon, where it splits off to the south. Although the two routes stay separate for the rest of their time in Colorado, they remain roughly parallel; the two will reunite further east, in Oakley, Kansas.

Our Colorado US Route 40 sign is a replica precisely made to the federal standards of 1926. Colorado made its US 40 signs following this exact standard  between 1928 and 1948. We created this sign using the original specification documents, just as those who made the original signs did, ensuring that every single detail matches. We’ve even dug up the classic block fonts in use during the era! At just a fraction of the cost of an original sign, you can have a historically-accurate display piece, thanks to our faithful replica.

Our Colorado US Route 40 sign is flat printed, right here in the United States, on heavy 14-gauge steel. Much like the porcelain signs commonly used in the West in the early days of the automobile, this is a non-reflective sign, with a high-gloss finish to protect it from the elements. That means it will stand the test of time when installed outdoors, even in the Rockies! Convenient mounting holes are included to make displaying it even easier. Choose from the following sizes:

  • 12⅜ in. × 12 in. (a scaled-down version for those with space or cost constraints)
  • 16½ in. × 16 in. (the size of the original markers, until approximately 1961)
  • 24¾ in. × 24 in. (the size US route signage in the present day)
  • 36⅛ in. × 36 in. (a size used in the modern day when extra visibility is essential, such as at important junctions on high-speed roads)

We can make a sign like this with any state name and route number! We can also make a wide variety of route markers, including the 1948- and 1961-style US route signs, Interstate highways, and state route markers from almost any state. But route markers aren’t all we do… if you’re looking for a directional, warning, or welcome sign, we can make that too!
