Description

In the early days of the Southern California freeway system, highways were often referred to by name, rather than by number. These names were well known enough that they appeared on signs directing travelers toward the freeway, in much the same way that road number signs do. Many of these freeways were named after the destinations they led to. One such freeway is the Santa Monica Freeway, which connects downtown Los Angeles with…well, Santa Monica. This freeway later became a part of Interstate 10. Over the years, the name Santa Monica Freeway was phased out on new signage. Local parlance shifted to match, and these days it’s often just called the 10.

Our Interstate 10 Santa Monica Freeway guide sign is a precise replica of a sign that once appeared on westbound I-10, just past the East Los Angeles Interchange. It is made to the exact state standard used for freeway signage from 1959 to 1962. The 1959 style is notable for being the first using a green background, as required by federal Interstate System standards; previously, freeway signs in California were black. The original of this sign was scrapped many years ago, but if it hadn’t been, it wouldn’t fit in your house anyway! Our freeway sign replicas take these great old navigational aids and scale them down to make an attractive display piece for any room of your home.

Like all of our signs, our Interstate 10 Santa Monica Freeway guide sign is flat printed on heavy 14-gauge steel. These signs are non-reflective, with a high gloss finish that blends well with any home’s decor. It can also be installed outdoors, and will stand up to the elements for years to come, even in sunny Southern California. To make it even easier to display this sign, we’ve included convenient pre-drilled mounting holes. This sign is available in the following sizes:

  • 18 in. × 8 in.
  • 27 in. × 12 in.
  • 40½ in. × 18 in.
  • 81 in. × 36 in. (This one is so big, we’ll split it into three panels to make it easier to move and install.)

We would be happy to make signs like this for any of Southern California’s freeways, or for any other destination, anywhere in the world! Of course, we can also make standalone route markers, mileage and direction signs, welcome signs, warning signs…Just about any road sign you can think of!
