It was originally called Little Ireland, as it was populated by Irish workers who built the Erie and Oswego canals. Salt mining began to become a part of the region’s economy thereafter. In 1830, the village was incorporated as Liverpool, taking on the name of the salt-producing city in England. Today, Liverpool’s location along the shore of Onondaga Lake makes it a hot spot for visitors seeking to enjoy its natural beauty. Onondaga Lake Park is over eight miles long and bills itself as “the Central Park of Central New York”.
