North Carolina Highway 143 is North Carolina’s section of part of the road that comprises the Cherohala Skyway in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. The Cherohala Skyway winds through the magnificent Smoky Mountains and passes through the Cherokee and Nantahala national forests along the way, hence the name. Although the road had been planned since 1958, it was not actually completed until 1996, at a total cost of one hundred million dollars! This was, of course, due to the rugged terrain the highway crosses. This same terrain lends the road its natural beauty, though, making it a stunning drive. In fact, the Federal Highway Administration has designated this road as a National Scenic Byway. This distinction is one that only 184 roads in the country enjoy.
