Elfreth’s Alley is a historic residential street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Old City. The alley was open by 1704, and received its current name around 1750. It is named after Jeremiah Elfreth, a blacksmith who owned land along the alley near its intersection with Second Street. The houses along the street were built between 1703 and 1836 in the Georgian and Federal styles common in the city at the time. As time went on and the city changed, Elfreth’s Alley didn’t, giving visitors a glimpse of 18th- and 19th-century Philadelphia. The Elfreth’s Alley Museum is located in one home, restored to its colonial-era appearance. The rest of the street remains a residential neighborhood home to people living their day-to-day lives on the historic alley.
