California (CSAA) Coast Road Inglenook, Ten Mile River, Fort Bragg directional sign

In the early days of the automobile, road signs in California were provided by private auto clubs, rather than the state government. In Northern California, this was the responsibility of the California State Automobile Association. One sign installed by CSAA was located in the town of Cleone, on what was then called the Coast Road (which is now State Route 1). It provided directions and distances to Inglenook and 10 Mile River in one direction, and Fort Bragg in the other.

Our Inglenook, Ten Mile River, Fort Bragg Coast Road highway sign is made to the 1919 CSAA specification. This is the style that included the CSAA logo at the bottom and the sharp-cornered diamond—earlier styles lacked the logo, while later ones rounded the corners off for safety reasons. The original of this sign probably washed out to sea in the 1964 floods and is halfway to Hawaii by now. If it somehow survived, it would certainly go for many hundreds or even thousands of dollars, were it to turn up on the collector’s market. Our replica makes an excellent addition to the decor of any space, at just a fraction of the cost of the original…and with no need for a wetsuit.

Our Inglenook, Ten Mile River, Fort Bragg sign is flat printed in the United States on heavy steel. It has a high-gloss finish much like the porcelain enamel of the original, in both appearance and durability. (That means you can install it outdoors if you so choose!) • Approx. 29 in. ×  23 in. (18½ inches along each side, the actual size as posted along the Coast Road)
