The Appalachian Trail is a hiking trail in the eastern United States. It follows the course of the Appalachian Mountains from Springer Mountain in northern Georgia to Mt. Katahdin in Maine, a distance of 2,197 miles (3,356 km). It is one of the longest trails in the world, covering an elevation range of 124 ft (38 m) above sea level in New York, to 6,643 feet at the Tennessee–North Carolina line. Most people hike the trail in sections, which can vary in difficulty from beginner-level to strenuous, but every year less than a thousand “thru-hikers” make it all the way from Georgia to Maine or vice versa.
