El Paso is the westernmost city in Texas, at the state’s westernmost tip, wedged in between the state of New Mexico to the north and west and the city of Juárez, Mexico, to the south. It is rather isolated from the rest of Texas; it is an eight-hour drive to San Antonio, nine and a half hours to Dallas, and 857 miles to the other side of the state in Orange. It is the only major Texas city in the Mountain time zone (the rest of the state observes Central Time).

This style used a white background, which was typical of this type of sign in the pre-Interstate era. This style was used until 1978, which it was changed to the modern green background. The sign includes the population figure of 276,687, which is accurate to the 1960 Census, the first taken after this standard was adopted.
