Description
The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail commemorates the historic expedition of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The two men journeyed across the western United States from 1804 to 1806, with a goal of exploring the newly acquired Louisiana Territory and finding a water route to the Pacific Ocean. The Lewis and Clark Trail follows their route across the continent: from Pennsylvania down the Ohio River to St. Louis, then up the Missouri River to Montana, then across Idaho to the Columbia River, then across Oregon to the Pacific. The trail stretches over 4,900 miles through 16 states. Managed by the National Park Service, it includes both historic sites and natural landscapes. Interpretive centers along the way highlight the cultural and ecological significance of the expedition, including its interactions with numerous Native American tribes.
