Description
The National Road, built between 1811 and 1837, is the first road to be funded by the United States government. It began in Cumberland, Maryland and extended to what was then the capital of Illinois, Vandalia. It clipped the northern panhandle of what was then Virginia, and is now West Virginia. The National Road was later incorporated into the National Old Trails Road, an early auto trail. When the United States began numbering highways on the national level in 1926, the old National Road became part of US Route 40. The Federal Highway Administration recognized the historic nature of the National Road by declaring it an All-American Road in 2002. Only 31 roads in the whole country share this honor.
Our Wast Virginia Historic National Road sign is a faithful replica of those marking the route on its brief journey through West Virginia. Made from photos of the sign in use in the field, it include the stars-and-stripes shield used to signify the National Road along its route. It also includes a representation of the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, which the National Road used to cross the Ohio River. Relive your memories of this historic road, or simply add a bit of patriotic flair to any space, with our recreation of this sign.
Our West Virginia Historic National Road marker is printed on heavy, 14-gauge steel. You can display it indoors or outdoors thanks to its durable, non-reflective finish. To make installation easy, convenient mounting holes have been included. Take your pick of the following sizes:
