Description
The “Added Lane” sign, which carries the sign code of W4-3, is a warning sign used to inform drivers that an additional lane is joining the roadway in the same direction of travel. The Added Lane sign was added to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices in 1978, after experience showed that drivers could potentially become confused and make unnecessary lane changes at freeway onramps to accommodate entering traffic. This sign reduces confusion, and thus potential collisions, by clarifying that vehicles from the entering roadway will not need to merge.
