Sonoma, California Historical Landmarks sign

Description

Sonoma is one of the oldest and most historic cities in California. The city traces its origin to Mission San Francisco Solano, which was built in 1823 by Mexican authorities to reinforce their control of the region. In 1833, the Mexican government decided to close down the California missions, assigning General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo to oversee the process of converting the settlement to a civilian town. Thirty-three American rebels arrived in Sonoma in June 1846, capturing Vallejo and taking control of the barracks. The rebels designed a flag for themselves featuring a bear, and thus the event became known as the Bear Flag Revolt. Though it was not known in California at the time, war between the United States and Mexico had been declared that May, The U.S. Navy captured Monterey on July 7, declaring California to be United States territory. Two days later, the US flag replaced the Bear Flag in Sonoma, subsuming the revolt into the wider US-Mexican War.

Owing to its importance to the founding of California as a US state, Sonoma is chock-full of historical landmarks. In fact, there are so many there that the state dispensed with its usual practice of marking them with individual signs. Instead, they installed one big “Historical Landmarks” sign in Sonoma Plaza. Many landmarks related to the Bear Flag Revolt, including the Sonoma Mission, General Vallejo’s home, the Presidio of Sonoma, and the Bear Flag Monument, are listed. Later points of interest, such as inns and attractions related to Sonoma’s location in the heart of California wine country, are also shown. The original sign, done in the standard style of historical landmark signage in California (though on a much longer sign than usual), was removed between 2013 and 2015. Our replica lets you celebrate Sonoma’s history by bringing back to life a classic sign that is itself now part of history.

Our Sonoma Historical Landmarks sign is flat printed on heavy-duty 14-gauge American steel. It has a high-gloss, non-reflective finish highly reminiscent of the porcelain enamel that was used to finish the original sign. It also makes the sign durable enough to withstand the elements when installed outdoors.  Pre-punched mounting holes are included to make installation quick and hassle-free.
