At Cape Hatteras National Seashore in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the National Park Service is responsible for managing access of the area’s beaches. The NPS has established a series of of off-road vehicle ramps connecting North Carolina Highway 12 to the shore. These ramps are numbered 2 through 4 on Bodie Island, 23 through 55 on Hatteras Island, and 59 through 72 on Ocracoke Island. Legal use of these ramps requires a permit, as well as adherence to a number of regulations designed to protect the area’s wildlife, especially nesting sea turtles. Each ramp has a sign with a number identifying it for the benefit of those seeking a particular favorite stretch of beach.
