Description
Badwater Basin (formerly spelled Bad Water) is the lowest point in North America, 279.6 feet below sea level. It is located in Death Valley National Park, in Inyo County, California. The name comes from a spring that forms a pool at the spot. Normally, this would be a welcome sight, being that it’s deep in the Mojave Desert. However, the salinity of the basin means that the water in the pool is undrinkable, thus the name “bad water”. Interestingly, Badwater Basin is only about 85 miles away from (and in the same county as) Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous 48 states.
Our Bad Water, 279.6 Feet Below Sea Level sign is a precise recreation of the sign that was posted at the sign that was posted in the basin in 1934. It identifies the location as the lowest point in the western hemisphere (which is no longer true, as a lower spot has been discovered in Argentina since then). At the bottom of the sign are the logos of the National Park Service and Automobile Club of Southern California (who was responsible for making and installing the sign). It is unknown what happened to the original sign; chances are it was sold for scrap long ago. Bring it back to life with our faithful replica.
Our Bad Water sign is printed on heavy 14-gauge steel. It has a glossy finish that is a near-exact match for the porcelain enamel finish of the original sign. It’s durable, too, able to withstand the elements for years, even in climates as harsh as Death Valley! And to make installation easy, we’ve included convenient mounting holes. This sign is available in the following sizes:
- 12 in. × 9 in.
- 20 in. × 15 in.
- 28 in. × 21 in.
- 40 in. × 30 in.
