Description

Route 34 is a state highway in central New Jersey. Along its 27-mile course, it passes through the townships of Aberdeen and Wall.

Aberdeen Township was founded in 1857 and was originally called Matawan Township. In 1895, the borough of Matawan was split off of it. In 1977, residents voted to change the name to Aberdeen Township, to avoid confusion with the borough of Matawan that was once part of it. The new name had the benefit of making the township the first municipality in New Jersey when sorted alphabetically.

Wall Township was founded in 1851 and named after Garret D. Wall, a general who served in New Jersey during the War of 1812. It was the site of one of the Marconi Company’s first transatlantic radio receivers, which operated from 1900 to 1924. The township was also home to Wall Stadium, a motorsports racetrack where many well-known racers competed early in their careers, such as the Truex family and Richard Petty.
