Description
One of the hazards of driving in the forested areas of California and western Nevada are encounters with bears. From 1995 to 2020, over 400 bears were killed by vehicles in Yosemite National Park alone. And a run-in with a bear is bad news for the driver too—a black bear can reach 550 lb (250 kg), and running into something that large is likely to do considerable damage to the vehicle and its occupants. Not only that, but bears present a hazard to anyone outside of a vehicle too.
Our bear crossing warning sign is an exact replica of those used in the states of California and Nevada. Although the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices has a bear warning sign, it has only one bear on it, while the California–Nevada version has two. Twice the bears means twice as good of a sign, so we chose this one to add to our library. We’ve used the California Department of Transportation SW59 signage specification, dated August 5, 2003, to make this sign. Our replica looks just like the original signs because, mathematically, it is just like the originals! Please note, however, that our replica is not retroreflective because it is intended as a display piece only, and therefore does not meet the standards required for installation on a public roadway.
Our bear crossing warning sign is printed on heavy 14-gauge steel. Its attractive, glossy finish will allow it to be displayed for years, either indoors or outdoors. To make installation easy, we’ve included pre-drilled mounting holes. This sign is available in the following sizes (all measured along the sides, rather than from point to point):
- 12 in. × 12 in.
- 16 in. × 16 in.
- 24 in. × 24 in.
- 36 in. × 36 in.
