US Route 89 originally ran straight up the center of the state of Arizona. It started in Nogales, then proceeded north through Tucson and Phoenix, then up to Flagstaff and Page. It crossed over to Utah north of Page. In the early 1990s, the southern end of US-89 was cut back to Flagstaff; the portion of highway south of there was considered redundant to I-17, I-10, and I-19. The portion of US-89 that remains is still important, however, as it is the primary route from Flagstaff to Lake Powell.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Arizona signed US routes with colored markers. While several other states tried out colored route markers during this time frame, Arizona was unique for using the colors to indicate cardinal directions. Because US-89 was a north–south route, it had orange and green markers. Orange markers were placed going northbound, and green going southbound.
Our replica Arizona US Route 89 signs bring Arizona’s colored US route markers back to life. We’ve recreated them using photos of the original markers that were in use in 1957. It is often very difficult to find original markers like this on the collector’s market. For one thing, most of them have disappeared, probably sold for scrap long ago. When one does go on sale, it’s likely to go for an outrageous amount of money. Our replica lets you get a sign just like the real thing, for only a fraction of the price.
Our Arizona colored US-89 markers are printed on heavy 14-gauge steel. These signs are non-reflective, allowing them to serve as an excellent indoor display piece. They also have a high-gloss coating that will protect them from both the desert sun and the winter snows in the higher elevations. Convenient mounting holes allow for easy installation. These signs are available in your choice of green or orange, and in the following sizes:
- 12⅜ in. × 12 in.
- 16½ in. × 16 in.
- 24¾ in. × 24 in.
- 37⅛ in. × 36 in.
We can make a sign like this for any of Arizona’s US routes! We can also make older or newer versions of the US-89 marker, or something else entirely. Want something you don’t see on our website? All you have to do is contact Jake to place your custom order.
