Description

As a region’s transportation needs change, highway numbers are added and deleted from the area’s transportation system. Some highway numbers end up being reused for a number of multiple highways over the years. Michigan’s M-120 is one such highway number. It has been used in three different places. The first was in the northwest part of Lansing, from 1930 to 1939, when it was renumbered as M-174. This freed the M-120 designation to be used in far southern Michigan, linking Ohio’s State Route 120 to Indiana’s SR-120. In 1961, this M-120 became a county road. Finally, in 1969, the present-day M-120 was established. This M-120 is a former section of M-20 extending north of Muskegon. One unusual feature of this M-120 is that, at the junction with M-82 near Fremont, the road passes through a point common to three counties. Were someone to stand on this point (which is not advised because it is right in the middle of the road!), they would be in Muskegon, Oceana, and Newaygo counties at the same time!

Our M-120 signs are available in the styles used on all three Michigan highways. The 1926-style sign, in the shape of a diamond with block fonts, was used on the first two incarnations of M-120. The second M-120 was also signed in the 1949 style, with the digits done in the custom font only ever used in Michigan. The sign style used since 1969, with the diamond on a black square background, was only ever used on the present-day M-120. All three signs are a great way to show your appreciation for Michigan’s highway history!

Our Michigan M-120 signs are flat printed in the U.S. on American steel. They have a glossy, non-retroreflective finish that allows them to look great indoors while also being able to withstand a snowy Michigan winter. Mounting holes are included to make installation easy. The signs are available in the following sizes (with the diamond-shaped signs being measured from point to point):

  • 12 in. × 12 in. (for the decorator with a space or monetary budget)
  • 16 in. × 16 in. (the size commonly used in the days of the 1926 and 1949 designs)
  • 24 in. × 24 in. (initially used for signage at junctions and other places needing high visibility, before becoming the standard size in 1961)
  • 36 in. × 36 in. (a modern size used on freeways and other high-visibility applications)

We can make a sign like these with any number you choose! We can also make state highway signs for just about any other state or province. And, of course, we also offer directional, welcome, warning, and other road signs. Don’t see the sign you want on our website? Just place a custom order! Contact us today to get started!
