Description
Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road is one of the most scenic roads in all of Montana. It spans the width of the park from west to east and is about 50 miles long. Along the way, it crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. This road is not for the faint of heart. It is carved into the side of the mountains and is narrow and winding. In some sections, a steep dropoff lies just beyond the edge of traveled way. Guardrails are scarce, due to avalanches in the winter months. However, the road richly rewards those willing to brave the driving conditions with unparalleled views of the park.
In 1983, the Going-to-the-Sun Road was added to the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of the feats of engineering its construction required. It was the first road to ever be added to the register. The Going-to-the-Sun Road was additionally designed a National Historic Landmark in 1997; it is one of only about 2,500 landmarks of any kind in the country so designated.
If you go to Glacier National Park, you’ll find the Going-to-the-Sun Road marked with signs in the shape of a rounded triangle, called a Reuleaux triangle. These markers are brown and show the winding road receding into the distance. In the background, the sun peeks between the Montana mountains.
