The Erie Canalway Trail is a part of the Empire State Trail system. It runs parallel to the historic Erie Canal, the first aquatic link between the Great Lakes above Niagara Falls and the Hudson River (and thus New York City and the Atlantic). The canal’s opening in 1825 connected Buffalo and Albany via Utica, Syracuse, and Rochester, allowing the spread of commerce and spurring the development of the Midwest. Watercraft were pulled along with mules using towpaths constructed alongside the canal. Eventually, the commercial traffic using the Erie Canal shifted to railroads, and then highways. Although cargo is still occasionally shipped on the canal, it is now primarily used by small recreational craft. Accordingly, stretches of the old towpaths have been converted to trails, allowing cyclists and hikers to enjoy the scenery of the canal and the lands it crosses.
