Rhode Island Watch Your Speed sign

Over the years, American states have tried a number of various methods to try to control the speed of traffic on their highways. Some states have relied on traffic cameras, others speed bumps; some, like Montana, have experimented with no speed control at all. Rhode Island’s approach was posting these sternly-worded “Watch Your Speed” signs.

This sign declares Rhode Island to be “THE SAFE STATE”. Below that, in large block letters, is the command to “WATCH YOUR SPEED”. Then comes a warning of “RIGID ENFORCEMENT”. (It is left to the driver to determine whether actually slowing down is warranted, or if the State Police are enforcing merely being aware of one’s speed.) Finally, the message is signed by the Division of State Police. The whole sign is in the very serious-looking standard block font of the era, adding to the direness of the warning.

An original Watch Your Speed sign is very rare to find scrapped. That’s why we’ve brought this old classic back to life. Our recreation makes an excellent display piece for your garage, den, or man cave.

Our Watch Your Speed sign is flat printed on heavy-gauge steel. It comes in four sizes: 12, 16, 24, and 36 inch square. It is a non-reflective sign, just like the real thing. You can enjoy it indoors or outdoors. (If you would like a different size version, just ask Jake to place your custom order!)
