Tennessee State Route 165 is Tennessee’s portion of the Cherohala Skyway in eastern Tennessee and North Carolina. (On the North Carolina side of the line, it’s NC 143.) The Cherohala Skyway winds through the gorgeous Smoky Mountains, passing through the Cherokee and Nantahala national forests, thus the name. Although the road had been planned since 1958, it was not actually finished until 1996, at a total cost of one hundred million dollars! This was, of course, due to the rugged terrain the highway crosses. This same terrain, though, lends the road its natural beauty, making it a stunning drive. In fact, the Federal Highway Administration recognizes it as a National Scenic Byway. This is a distinction that only 184 roads in the country enjoy.
