Thank You For Traveling The West Virginia Turnpike sign

The West Virginia Turnpike is a north-south toll road linking the state’s capital and largest city, Charleston, to Beckley in the southern part of the state. Called “88 miles of miracle” because of how hard it was to build a highway through the troublesome terrain it traverses, the turnpike was originally built with only two lanes. It would stay as such all through the 1950s and 1960s as traffic consistently increased. By the 1970s, connections to the Interstate System at each terminus of the turnpike were adding even more vehicles to the overburdened two-lane road. Large numbers of deadly accidents soon followed. It wasn’t until 1976 that West Virginia authorities began overhauling the turnpike to four-lane Interstate standard, a task that took until 1987. As sections were upgraded, they were added to the Interstate System as interstates 64 and 77.

Our “Thank You For Traveling the West Virginia Turnpike” sign is a re-imagining of the signs found at the ends of the toll road.  The original signs include the seal of the West Virginia Parkways Authority, who maintains the turnpike. Our sign replaces this with the three highway markers that have marked the turnpike: I-64, I-77, and the original West Virginia Turnpike marker. The original of this sign is quite large—to be easily read from the turnpike, the text must be over a foot tall! We’ve scaled the sign down to a much more manageable size. That lets you add it to your garage, bar, or anywhere else needing a touch of Appalachian flavor.

Our “Thank You For Traveling the West Virginia Turnpike” sign is made in the USA from heavy 14-gauge steel. Its glossy, non-reflective finish can be enjoyed either indoors or outdoors.
