Most countries with limited-access highways, where you can only get on or off at certain designated junctions, have some method of numbering said junctions. In the United States, these numbers are normally displayed on a separate plaque that is mounted like a tab above the main body of the exit sign. Although it is not common knowledge, the exact placement of this tab actually has a meaning. If the tab is placed on the right side of the sign, it means the exit will be on the right side of the highway. If the tab is on the left, it indicates a left exit.
