California–Oregon Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway sign

Description

The Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway is a highway in northern California and southern Oregon. Along its 500-mile length, the byway snakes through beautiful landscapes shaped by volcanic activity. It brings travelers to several of the region’s most fantastic natural features. In California, the highway passes near the base of Mount Shasta, a volcano towering 10,000 feet above the highway. Further north, in Oregon, drivers can visit Crater Lake, a natural lake formed in the caldera of an extinct volcano. In recognition of the highway’s scenic beauty, the Federal Highway Administration has designated it an All-American Road. Only 31 roads in the entire country carry this designation.

Along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, special signs guide the traveler through their journey. These signs depict the road among the evergreens, passing near one of the region’s many lakes. Above the road flies a bald eagle, and Mount Whitney looms in the distance. In California, this image is displayed on a white square blank, with the words VOLCANIC LEGACY in blue beneath it. On the Oregon side of the line, the graphic is printed on the distinctive five-sided blank Oregon uses for all of its scenic byways.
